The earlier films, especially Ip Man, worked because they combined martial arts mastery with themes of dignity, culture, and resilience. Donnie Yen’s portrayal of Ip Man became iconic, and The Finale was clearly designed to close his journey in a meaningful way.
In my view, Ip Man 5 would only work if it avoids undoing that ending. Instead of directly continuing Ip Man’s personal story, the film could shift focus to his legacy—perhaps through his students, such as a young Bruce Lee, or other disciples carrying Wing Chun into a changing world.
A strong direction could explore how Ip Man’s philosophy survives after him, especially in a more modern or international setting. This would allow the film to keep the spirit of the series while introducing new conflicts and characters.
Action-wise, the film would still need to deliver tight, grounded choreography—less about spectacle and more about technique and discipline. That’s what made the series stand out compared to more exaggerated martial arts films.
However, the biggest risk is nostalgia. If Ip Man 5 relies too heavily on bringing back the same emotional beats or forcing Ip Man into the story again, it could weaken the impact of the previous ending.
Overall, a hypothetical Ip Man 5 could succeed if it becomes a story about legacy rather than continuation—honoring what came before while allowing something new to grow from it.
