At around 4:47 p.m., witnesses across several states reported a bright object traveling rapidly through the atmosphere. Many described it as a greenish fireball with a trail of smoke, suggesting that it could have been a large meteor or space debris burning up during re-entry.

However, some observers claimed the object changed direction before descending toward the countryside near Kecksburg.

Shortly afterward, residents in the area reported hearing a loud crash in the nearby forest.

Witnesses Describe a Strange Object

Local residents and volunteer firefighters soon entered the woods to investigate. According to several witnesses, they discovered a metallic, acorn-shaped object partially embedded in the ground.

Descriptions of the object included:

• Roughly 10–15 feet (3–4.5 meters) long

• Bronze or gold colored metal surface

• A shape similar to a large acorn or bell

• Strange symbol-like markings resembling hieroglyphs on a band around the object

Before the witnesses could get closer, military personnel reportedly arrived and sealed off the area.

The Military Response

According to local reports, U.S. Army personnel and other officials quickly secured the crash site.

Several witnesses later claimed they saw the object loaded onto a flatbed truck and transported away under military escort.

Officials initially stated that nothing unusual had been recovered, and some suggested that the reports were simply the result of a meteor sighting.

The U.S. Air Force investigation under Project Blue Book later concluded that no UFO crash occurred and that the fireball was likely a natural event.
