DECLASSIFIED FILES SHED LIGHT ON UFO REPORTS HANDLED BY UK DEFENCE OFFICIALS

Recently released archival documents reveal how the United Kingdom’s defence authorities processed and investigated reports of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) over several decades. The files, now publicly available through The National Archives, provide a rare glimpse into how sightings reported by civilians, pilots, and soldiers were documented and reviewed by the government.

Government Records of Unexplained Sightings

The documents originate from the UK’s Ministry of Defence (MoD), which for years maintained a small administrative unit responsible for handling public and military reports of unusual aerial phenomena. According to the records, the department’s primary role was not to confirm extraterrestrial activity, but to determine whether any sightings posed a potential threat to national security or involved foreign aircraft.

One report included in the files describes a sighting on 7 June 2008 at approximately 23:00 local time, when an observer reported seeing a mysterious aerial object over Westbury near Shrewsbury, Shropshire. The observer claimed to have seen the object with the naked eye. However, the report contained limited details regarding the object’s distance, speed, or movement, making further analysis difficult. As with many similar cases, the sighting remained officially classified as “unexplained.”

Military and Aviation Encounters

Other records include Freedom of Information (FOI) requests seeking details about sightings reported by military personnel. One inquiry asked about an incident involving crew members of RAF No. 2 Squadron who allegedly observed an unidentified object during a flight in November 1990. The MoD’s response indicated that such reports were logged but often lacked sufficient evidence to determine their origin.

Additional FOI requests referenced sightings by soldiers stationed at Tern Hill Barracks in Shropshire, as well as alleged historical incidents such as a supposed UFO crash near Caldbeck, Cumbria in 1954. In most cases, officials replied that the ministry held little or no confirmed evidence supporting extraordinary claims.

The Role of the “UFO Desk Officer”

One of the more unusual documents in the archive is a 2008 job description for a “UFO Desk Officer.” The role involved reviewing incoming reports, coordinating responses to public inquiries, and responding to FOI requests related to UFO sightings. The position also required analysing available evidence to determine whether reported objects might be misidentified aircraft, atmospheric phenomena, or satellites.

Emails included in the files show that members of the public occasionally contacted the MoD asking about job opportunities within the government’s “UFO department.” Officials clarified that the role was primarily administrative and analytical rather than investigative in a scientific sense.

Transparency Through Declassification

The documents were released as part of a broader transparency initiative in June 2013, when large collections of UFO-related records were transferred to the national archives. Officials stated that maintaining a dedicated UFO investigation program was no longer considered necessary because most sightings were eventually explained as natural or man-made phenomena.

Despite this, the files demonstrate how seriously defence authorities once treated reports of unidentified aerial activity—particularly when they occurred near military installations or airspace used by the Royal Air Force.

Mystery Remains

While the declassified records offer insight into government procedures, they provide few definitive answers about the nature of the reported objects. Many sightings remain unresolved due to incomplete information or lack of physical evidence.

For researchers and UFO enthusiasts alike, the archives reveal less about alien spacecraft and more about how governments respond when the sky presents something they cannot easily explain.
