DECLASSIFIED UFO FILES: THE TRUTH BEHIND THE 1980 RENDLESHAM FOREST INCIDENT

Recently released documents from the UK’s National Archives, part of the “UFO June 2013 Release,” reveal new details surrounding one of the most mysterious UFO encounters in Europe — the Rendlesham Forest Incident, which occurred near RAF Bentwaters in December 1980.

Often referred to as “Britain’s Roswell,” the case has sparked decades of debate among researchers, military personnel, and UFO investigators.

Reports of an Unknown Craft and Strange Entities

According to a letter discussed in the released files, investigators from a unit referred to as OSI examined reports of a craft of unknown origin landing near RAF Bentwaters on the night of December 29–30, 1980.

The report claimed the craft was operated by several humanoid entities approximately 1.5 meters tall. They were described as wearing nylon-coated pressure suits without helmets. Witnesses noted that the misty weather conditions that night made it appear as if the beings were hovering slightly above the ground.

Investigators allegedly recorded audio of the entities speaking. The voices were described as an electronically synthesized version of English with a strong American accent. Similar transmissions were reportedly intercepted sporadically by intelligence services as far back as 1973.

The entities were also said to have claw-like hands with three fingers and an opposable thumb, adding to the strange descriptions documented in the report.

Government Response: “A Poor Fake”

Years later, a U.S. researcher submitted a Freedom of Information (FOI) request asking the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) to confirm the authenticity of the letter.

The MoD responded that the document was not part of the official Rendlesham file and stated that it appeared to be “a rather poor fake.” Officials also confirmed that they do not possess any recordings of aliens speaking, contradicting claims made in the document.

Because the name of the letter’s author had been removed, the MoD said it could not identify who wrote the document or locate any related correspondence.

Continued Public Interest and FOI Requests

The Rendlesham Forest incident continues to attract widespread attention from UFO researchers and the public. According to the released records, the MoD has received at least 26 Freedom of Information requests related to the incident since 2005.

Other requests have asked about:

  • Alleged anomalous radiation levels detected in Rendlesham Forest after the incident

  • Whether the Royal Air Force scrambled aircraft to intercept UFOs over various locations

  • Government knowledge about theories such as Planet X or Nibiru

Release of UFO Files to the Public

The documents also explain the UK government’s policy on UFO files. Many records dating from 1967 to 1987, along with some earlier surviving documents, have been transferred to The National Archives and made available for public examination.

Officials noted that the decision to release these files was not influenced by France’s decision in 2007 to publish its own UFO archives, suggesting the UK policy was already in motion.

A Mystery That Remains Unsolved

Despite decades of investigation and multiple document releases, the Rendlesham Forest incident remains unresolved. Some military witnesses insist they encountered technology beyond human capability, while government officials maintain that many claims surrounding the event are exaggerated, misinterpreted, or fabricated.

More than 40 years later, the case still stands as one of the most intriguing UFO mysteries in modern history, leaving researchers and the public wondering whether the truth behind the events in Rendlesham Forest has yet to be fully revealed.
