Colombo / Arabian Sea — Sri Lanka has launched an urgent maritime evacuation after a deadly attack struck the Iranian naval vessel IRIS Bushehr, forcing more than 200 Iranian sailors to abandon the damaged ship and seek safety at sea.

According to regional maritime authorities, the vessel came under a sudden strike while operating in a tense corridor of the Arabian Sea, an area increasingly affected by escalating naval confrontations linked to the widening Middle East conflict.

 Sudden Strike at Sea

Early reports indicate that the Bushehr was hit by what officials described as multiple precision strikes, triggering fires and secondary explosions onboard. Several crew members were reportedly killed, while others were injured as the ship struggled to contain the damage.

Satellite tracking data suggested the vessel rapidly lost speed and began drifting after the attack, prompting a distress call that alerted nearby commercial and naval ships.

Within hours, rescue operations were underway.

Sri Lanka Leads Emergency Rescue

Responding to the emergency, Sri Lankan maritime authorities coordinated a rapid evacuation effort, dispatching rescue vessels and coordinating with merchant ships traveling through the busy sea lane.

More than 200 Iranian sailors were evacuated from lifeboats and floating rafts before being transported toward Sri Lankan waters for medical treatment and temporary shelter.

Officials in Colombo confirmed that hospitals and naval facilities were placed on standby to receive injured crew members.

 Rising Maritime Tensions

The attack highlights the growing danger across critical shipping routes near the Strait of Hormuz, where military activity has intensified amid the wider confrontation involving Iran, the United States, and regional allies.

Naval analysts warn that warships and commercial vessels alike are increasingly at risk as rival forces attempt to assert control over key maritime corridors.

While no group has formally claimed responsibility for the strike on the Bushehr, defense observers say the incident reflects the expanding scope of the conflict from land and air into major international sea lanes.

 Investigation Underway

Iranian authorities have pledged a full investigation into the attack, vowing that those responsible will face retaliation. Meanwhile, international maritime agencies are urging ships transiting the region to exercise extreme caution.

For now, the fate of the damaged IRIS Bushehr remains unclear as salvage teams assess whether the vessel can be stabilized or if it risks sinking.

One thing is certain: the battle for control of the seas is intensifying — and civilian shipping routes are increasingly caught in the crossfire.
