3 Australians were on U.S. submarine that sank Iranian warship
Three Australian personnel were on board a U.S. submarine that sank an Iranian warship, Australia’s prime minister said.
At least 87 people were killed yesterday when the U.S. torpedoed the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena off Sri Lanka as it was returning from naval exercises hosted by India. It was the first time since World War II that a torpedo launched from a U.S. Navy submarine had struck a vessel in combat.
“I can confirm that there were three Australian personnel on board that vessel,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told Sky News television, adding that they were there as part of training for the trilateral AUKUS security agreement among the U.S., Australia and Britain.
“I can confirm also, though, that no Australian personnel have participated in any offensive action against Iran,” Albanese said.
